Three former Orange County high school boys water polo standouts have been selected to the U.S. Olympic team bound for Tokyo.
The players are goalie Alex Wolf (Huntington Beach High) and sharp-shooting, right-hander attackers Hannes Daube (Orange Lutheran) and Luca Cupido (Newport Harbor).
The 6-foot-7 Wolf was The Register’s player of the year in 2014 and helped signal the Oilers’ rise as a powerhouse. He became a standout at UCLA.
Cupido, two-time Olympian, transferred to Newport Harbor from his native Italy to play as a senior in the fall of 2013. He was a first-team All-County selection on a list headlined by Mater Dei goalie McQuin Baron, who became his Olympic teammate in 2016.
Cupido is one of five returning Olympians on the 13-member squad.
Daube joins Wolf as a first-team Olympian. The All-County mainstay recently scored 15 goals to help the U.S. take silver at the FINA World League Super Final.
