After years of delays and creative team changes, filming on Indiana Jones 5 has finally been completed. And yet, we still don’t have a single official publicity photo from the movie. Heck, we don’t even have a title! What do we have to do to get a new look at Indy? Swipe an idol from its pedestal without disrupting the weight balance? Cross a seemingly invisible bridge? Find a crashed alien ship?
Well, while it’s not quite as exciting as a knight’s tomb declaring “X marks the spot,” director James Mangold did give us a bit of a hint on Twitter this week. “Although I’ve been cutting while shooting, I officially start editing INDY today!” Mangold tweeted. He went on to assure “all those asking about trailers and teasers, still drops and first looks and other peeks or sneaks,” that information will be coming, but it’s “just a bit too soon.”
Obviously, we’re a bit disappointed that we still don’t have more information. After all, it’s been almost fourteen full years since the last Indiana Jones movie, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, hit theaters in 2008. For most fans, Crystal Skull was a poor follow-up to 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and a low point on which to leave the beloved adventurer/archaeologist/not-very-diligent college professor. We’re all hungry to see if this latest movie can give Indy a fitting ending.
But if anyone has earned the benefit of the doubt, it’s James Mangold. Thanks to his work on films such as 3:10 to Yuma and Logan, Mangold has proven himself a reliable genre storyteller, someone who understands the mythic qualities and great potential of the characters he’s working with.
